How long does it take to decompose?

Its been a couple of months now since Santosh and I have been trying to become eco friendly..
  • we religiously separate the recyclable garbage..
  • do not take plastic bags while grocery shopping or even otherwise..
  • are a lot into organic fruits.. vegetables.. dairy products..
  • have stopped using the dryer to dry our clothes instead have gone completely traditional and dry them in the sun..
  • plug off electonic appliances when not in use..
We have a long way to go.. there are many things we know we can change for the better.. as and when we find out about them.. we will..

we are laughed at by many of our friends.. they think we are the 'weirdos'.. we earlier tried justifying our actions.. now we dont.. some day they will understand.. hope by that time is not too late for all of us!

Came across this interesting stats about how long some of the things we use daily take to decompose ( found this while researching on cloth diapers.. that story some other day)
  • Banana Peel: 3-4 weeks
  • Paper Bag: 1 month
  • Cotton Rag: 5 months
  • Wool Sock : 1 year
  • Lumber : 10-15 years
  • Tinned Steel Can: 80-100 years
  • Aluminum Can : 200-500 years (But if recycled, it can be reused within 6 weeks!)
  • Disposable Diapers: 500-600 years
  • Plastic Bags : 1 million years
  • Glass : Unknown
  • Styrofoam: Eternity
Quite interesting figures.. its really shocking that some of these products will out live evn our great great great grand children!!!
